AŞAĞI ILICA MOSQUE

The Aşağı Ilıca Mosque, a 19th-century cultural heritage asset owned by the Directorate General of Foundations, is located in the Odunpazarı district of Eskişehir. It is a typical Anatolian mosque with a pitched roof, featuring a minaret-less design, a semi-open late-congregation portico, a main prayer hall (harim), and a suspended women's gallery (mahfil). The structure is particularly noteworthy for the intricate hand-painted ornamentations (kalemişi) found within the main hall and on the gallery level.
The project commenced with a high-precision architectural survey, utilizing 3D laser scanning and advanced photogrammetry. The subsequent restitution phase was grounded in detailed historical research and comparative studies of analogous structures. Based on this research, a restoration project was conceptualized with a modern approach that is profoundly respectful of the building's historical and cultural significance, with a particular focus on the conservation of its decorative elements. The complete suite of survey, restitution, and restoration projects has been prepared.
