While its exact construction date is unknown, research indicates that the Cafer Subaşı Mosque, located in the Balat neighborhood of Istanbul's Fatih district, is a 16th-century structure. The history of the area suggests the mosque was exposed to fires, leading to significant alterations or complete reconstructions over its original form. It is documented that the structure was completely destroyed by a fire in 1941 and subsequently rebuilt in 1955 as a reinforced concrete building on its preserved original stone foundations.
The current building features a square-plan main prayer hall (harim) and an L-shaped gallery floor (mahfil), with ancillary structures added to its northern facade through later interventions. Based on the data gathered during the research phase, the restoration project's core principle was to preserve high-quality, historically significant period additions while removing non-original additions of poor quality.
A high-precision architectural survey of the building was conducted using the 3D LiDAR scanning method. Based on this detailed documentation, the restitution and restoration projects were prepared. The complete suite of projects has been approved by the relevant Conservation Board.
