ŞAPHANE KOCA SEYFULLAH AĞA MOSQUE

This historic building, owned by the Directorate General of Foundations and also known in records as Şaphane Great Mosque, is a timber-frame structure elevated on masonry piers. A distinctive feature is its wooden ceiling, which incorporates a central plastered dome constructed with a wooden rib system. The cultural heritage site is particularly noteworthy for the intricate hand-painted ornamentations (kalemişi) found on its walls and ceilings.

The project began with a high-precision architectural survey using 3D laser scanning and advanced photogrammetry to meticulously document the complex structure and its decorations. The restitution project was developed following extensive historical research and comparative studies of similar timber-frame mosques. The final restoration project was designed with a modern approach that is deeply respectful of the building's historical and cultural significance. The complete set of projects has been approved by the relevant Regional Conservation Board.
